8 Flavours of the World

Some tried, some not…!

  • Ecuador – avocado ice cream; guinea pig
  • Vienna – sheep’s testicles
  • Lisbon – mojitos on the waterfront
  • Rome – tiramisu gelato; zucchini pizza
  • Grand Cayman  – mudslide cocktail; fried snapper by the sea

Ecuador

On my first trip to Ecuador, we stopped for an ice cream break. The mystery flavour was avocado! Avocados are popular in Ecuador, also served in potato soup. Tried.

Also popular is cuy, a South American guinea pig. I didn’t try it for those who did, it was served with black coffee, apparently it adds to the flavour of the guinea pig. Cuy is oily and fatty. Not tried.

Guinea pig (cuy – pronounced “kwee”)

I went back in March for a month to do voluntary work in Quito. Ten volunteers between them shared one cuy. They wanted to try it but didn’t want to pay the $30 each for one! I also suspect it’s an acquired taste.

Vienna

Sheep’s testicles, seriously! Marcus didn’t finish the dish, I wonder why?! No amount of beer could wash this dish down! Not tried!

Sheep's testicles on the menu in Vienna. One of the 8 flavours of the World blog post I wrote.
Sheep’s testicles!

Lisbon

I tried my first mojito 20 years ago in Cuba, where else! And I’ve loved the taste ever since. I came across this vendor selling it on the marina in Lisbon. Two nights in a row I drank one sat on the steps watching the sunset, with the rest of the locals. The setting adding to the flavour. Tried.

Rome

As the saying goes “When in Rome”. Tiramisu gelato from the gelataria in Piazza Navona (in front of the fountain) and zucchini (courgette) pizza from around the corner before you enter the same Piazza. Tried.

Grand Cayman

I lived here for three years (a post for another day)! Sunday’s were spent either gorging on bottomless brunches or at the East End Fish Fry. A hut on the East End of the island serving whole fried snapper, dumplings and onions, sat on a bench, on the beach, looking out to the Caribbean sea. Tried.

I had my first (of many) Mudslides at Rum Point! O to the M to the G, delicious! Rum Point is a beautiful part of the island and was one of my favourite spots. Tried.

Bon appetite!
